Battle of the Bands news and big blog news!

I haven't been around much this week, and therefore, am having to postpone my Battle of the Bands submission. But only until the 17th, when I also will have the day off and be able to actually come visit those who participate. There's been so, so, so much going on: work and the other stuff that goes on every day, plus making sure all financial aspects of home ownership are in order and squared up for 2015 (done!), my son has a birthday Saturday, and, as the title suggests, there is big blog news!

Y'all are gonna kill me, but.....

I will soon be switching blogs again. Maybe as soon as Sunday - I already have my new blog set up and a working theme installed, I just need to play around with it a bit. I love the little spot I created for myself here, but my plan from the get-go was to eventually buy a domain and web hosting in an attempt to grow the ReInVintaged Goods brand. I just hadn't expected it to be this soon. But as luck would have it, I came across hosting stupid-cheap, and domain registration at 15% off, so I really couldn't pass it up. So....the new url is http://reinvintagedgoods.net. I know it's asking a lot to ask people to change their links UH-GAIN, but as I said - couldn't pass it up.

As for the battle, I have a pretty great one lined up that I hope you will enjoy. Whether it's here or there just depends on what I can get done in the time between now and then. I will be transferring my previous battle posts (all two of them) from over here to the new site ASAP, as well. Of course, I will also be visiting YOUR battles on Sunday, and will update you in my comments accordingly! But I am super excited to have my own domain again and get back to Wordpress! Can't wait to see you there!

BotB winner for 1.1.16

Wow. You guys surprise me each and every time. I really thought this would be a closer battle than it was, but boy, was I wrong! As it turns out, a vote from me would not have made a bit of difference. Most of you loved the bagpipes, and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers ran away with the win over Old 97s! Sorry I didn't get around to responding to comments individually. I usually try to do that, but time has really gotten away from me this go-round.

And this will similarly be short & sweet. I am making big plans for this blog, and currently trying to get things set up behind the scenes a bit more. I can't wait to have it all settled, and start posting more and doing more with it!

Farewell, 2015 - and Battle of the Bands for 1.1.16

I thought the blog needed a new look (or at least some new colors) for the New Year, so here we are. I picked dusk colors because I love that time right before sunset slips into the darkness of night. And since it's winter and the nights are longer, I've been seeing these colors a lot lately. Whatcha think?

So tell me HOW is that we're only a few hours away from 2016? I don't really know how we got here, and this fast, but honestly? I won't even be sorry to see 2015 go. Sure, it wasn't the worst of years. It was very good in the usual ways that I don't want to seem ungrateful for - we have our health, we are all currently employed. All that was made even better by the extra good fortune that fell into my lap: I own my home now, I launched ReInVintaged Goods - and have even made a few sales!, I fell in love with music again thanks to Ghost's latest, and the Foo Fighters have closed out the year with a free download of their latest EP, right on the front page of their website.

But the bad? Oh, my. I spent half the year gripped by worry over how I would make this home ownership thing happen. We lost so much incredible talent this year. An alarmingly high number of Facebook friends lost furry loved ones. As for me? The night before Christmas Eve, we lost Mini, our beloved Chihuahua puppy girl. I still haven't even been able to write anything about her, because she was another child to me, and we had her for almost 14 years. It's been a week now, and I can't tell if we are getting used to the loss yet or not (the holidays have us all discombobulated anyway). And I don't know whether to be thankful we said goodbye before this new year starts, so that we didn't start 2016 out on such a heartbreaking note.

So....here's to 2016. May it be better than 2015 in every way. I need a do-over, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

To start things on the blog off on the right note, here is my submission for Battle of the Bands. (I really will get a better pitch together for it here at some point, but this post....is not that point. If you're interested - and you totally should be! - just follow the link to Stephen's site to learn how to participate!). It's that old New Year's classic, Auld Lang Syne.

What I need you to do, if you are so inclined, is to listen to both versions of the song (video-watching is totally optional), then in the comments, vote for your favorite. Or least disliked. Whichever applies. If you like, you can also tell me why you voted the way you did.

First up, a rollicking, twangy cover by Texas's Old 97s. This is a LONG video, but the Auld Lang Syne portion of it starts at 6:42. It's not the worst quality, but not the best. I think you can probably get a good feel for their sound from it.

Now, for a little something different....a bagpipes? Yes, bagpipes! Here's "Auld Land Syne" from Scotland's Red Hot Chilli Pipers.

I'm hoping to have a close competition, because I have to say I absolutely LOVE both of these versions and can not choose one. I currently do not plan on voting, so I am hoping that it's not close enough to be a tie. I don't want to have to vote and break it.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, y'all!!!

First day of winter musings and BotB winner for 12.15.15

Happy first day of winter, y'all! Here in my neck o' the woods, it is cool, damp, soggy, and overcast, with storms forecast through Christmas. And everyone I know is fussing about how warm it is. I don't really mind the warmer weather (we only ever get a few days of pretty winter weather, if that), but I have to admit I am ready for winter to get here so it can come in, do its thing, and leave. I do not want cold temps well into May!

It is extremely unlikely that I will have anything "reinvented"-worthy here until next year. In truth? A lot of it really has had to do with simply not having good outdoor DIY weather on my days off. I have been extremely busy with my job - retail this time of year is crazy, as you all know, and this is the time of year I take as many hours as I can get, because those hours will inevitably slack off towards late January. But I've been dealing with a lot of stress at home as we watch our oldest girl, Mini's, health decline.

Mini in healthier times in one of her favorite places to be
besides a lap: a basket of laundry fresh from the dryer.

I won't go into all the details of all her issues, at least not here and now, but my heart is a bit heavy since this may really be our last Christmas with her, and she doesn't feel well. She has another vet appointment scheduled for Monday, but depending on what they find out, we may have to have a difficult decision to make. I am hopeful that we can make her feel better.

So over the past month or two, I have dropped my Pinning and Polyvore-ing in favor of de-stressing as much as possible until the New Year. It'll all happen - eventually!

So for this blog's first Battle of the Bands, I pitted two different versions of "Blue Christmas" - one done by Collective Soul, and the other from Bright Eyes - against one another. I chose to use Collective Soul's cover because they really make it their own, and I like how it sounds COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than the popular Elvis version, even down to the jam-band-rocking-out riffs at the end. I know some of you who voted considered that wonky and others just didn't like a more rock and roll version, but I liked it for all the reasons the rest of you didn't.

I loved (and therefore chose to use) Bright Eyes' version because, while truer to the Elvis arrangement, I loved the thumping beat and keys which I thought definitely made the song theirs. Not all of you felt they did enough to make it their own, but with a vote of 8-5 in their favor, more of you preferred the stylings of Bright Eyes over Collective Soul. I didn't even vote, since my vote would not have made a difference anyway. But I do slightly prefer the Bright Eyes version over Collective Soul's myself. Be sure to come back January 1 for another fun "battle!"

I'll have a Blue Christmas - and Battle of the Bands for 12.15.15

I am so completely in denial about Christmas being next week. NEXT. WEEK!!! How did that even happen? I know some of you haven't been able to get into the spirit because of the warmer-than-usual temps, but I haven't been able to get into it because I've been working as much as I can, the house has gotten into quite a mess, and my sons are grown and not into it at all anymore. So this year? We are doing nothing. I had planned to get my tiny tree up and create a vignette, but I have now accepted that that probably isn't going to happen, either. We are not exchanging gifts, just enjoying our day off with appetizers, desserts, and movies. With any luck, next year I will be ready, and have the house more ready, for holiday fetes and cheer!

You'll notice there's been a lack of posts after I swore I was going to do better. Try not to give up on me just yet. I just have to get my house and finances in better shape before I can start my remodel, manage my time better before I can start exercising and cooking, and unfortunately, I will need better weather on my days off to be able to complete any of the DIYs I have planned. In the meantime? It's never a bad time to enjoy music...and here is my favorite non-religious holiday song, Blue Christmas.

Although Elvis Presley didn't write this song, he is the one who made it famous. It has (before and) since been covered many times by many different artists from all ends of the musical spectrum, and I've come across several covers over the years that really get me in the mood for the holidays! So this song will be my re-entry into the world of "STMcC Presents BATTLE OF THE BANDS". If you're wondering what that's all about - well, it's a blog hop where you pit two different versions of the same song against one another for a "battle of the bands" on your own blog on the 1st and 15th of each month. You ask your readers to listen to each song, and tell you their favorite version in your comments. Then, you'll come back six days later to tally the votes, add your own, and declare a winner.

For your consideration today are covers from post-grunge Georgia band Collective Soul and Omaha, Nebraska Indie darlings Bright Eyes.

Collective Soul

Bright Eyes

Listen to both versions and then cast your vote for your favorite in the comments - it's that simple! And of course, feel free to tell me why/how you chose your favorite version if you are so inclined. I will be back on the 21st to cast my own vote and declare a winner. If you would like to visit more participants or participate in the next go-round, just head to Stephen's to read the hop rules and let him know. I look forward to seeing you there twice a month!

Hello, and welcome to my new home on the web!

That's not totally weird, is it? Announcing your new blog via a post specifically about yourself and your blog?

I don't know. It kind of seems like it, but here it is, anyway. Thanks for finding me, or following me over here. I loved my old blog, but I'm one of those bloggers who swears she wants to settle down and build a brand, yet frequently discards blogs (and the fledgling "brand" and all social media accounts associated with said blog) once they no longer "fit". That one lasted four years. I plan on leaving the blog up, (but will probably eventually delete the social media accounts). To me, that was still a good run. My longest yet.

What can I say? A lot happened in those four years. A lot. I got separated, lost a bit of chunk, divorced, went through a drastic job change, a drastic living situation change, nearly got Single White Femaled at one point, put the weight back on, went through two more drastic living situation changes, took on a second job, left the second job, decided to stay in Alabama rather than move back to my home state of Mississippi (at this time), fulfilled my dream of opening a little online vintage shop, had a bout of Love It or List It (minus any awesome remodeling) with the marital home, which I eventually wound up buying. More on that in another post. And I *think* that brings us up to speed.

I'm still trying to catch my breath, but ready to get down to the business of bettering myself in every way I can, remodeling this house (FINALLY!), completing upcycling and DIY projects in a more timely manner, overhauling my budget, working out, eating better, taking in more local culture and events, and, as always, finding vintage treasures to pass along! For more about me, feel free to check out my about me page. I do hope you'll want to visit often!
